Initially known as "Double Branch" due to the twin creeks traversing the area, it was later called "Gatorville," a nod to the local alligator population. Eventually, the community adopted the name "Wesley Chapel" after a Methodist chapel established at the intersection of State Road 54 and Boyette Road, honoring John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.
