Largo, Florida, established in 1905, holds the distinction of being the first municipality in Pinellas County to implement a council manager form of government in 1913. Over the years, it transitioned between "town" and "city" status multiple times, finally settling as a city in 1974.

The city is renowned for its extensive park system, offering residents and visitors a variety of recreational opportunities. Largo Central Park, spanning 70 acres, features a playground, picnic pavilions, and a miniature railroad. Each December, the park is adorned with over two million holiday lights, creating a festive atmosphere.

Adjacent to Largo Central Park is the Florida Botanical Gardens, encompassing 182 acres of cultivated gardens and natural landscapes. The gardens showcase a diverse array of flora, including native plants, tropical fruit, and butterfly gardens, providing a serene environment for nature enthusiasts.

Eagle Lake Park, covering 162 acres, was once owned by the Taylor family, among the area's early settlers. The park offers miles of hiking and walking trails, playgrounds, and shelters, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities.

Largo's commitment to environmental preservation is evident in its designation as a National Arbor Day Tree City for 35 consecutive years as of 2023. This recognition highlights the city's dedication to maintaining and enhancing its urban forest.

The city has a sister city relationship with Tosayamada in Kōchi, Japan, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the two communities.

Laying the Foundation as You Begin a Largo Pond Installation

Before breaking ground, careful planning is key. Choose a location that gets plenty of sunlight to encourage plant growth and support aquatic life. The area should be level and free from underground utilities or tree roots that could cause issues later.

Think about the pond’s purpose and your intentions. Is it meant for aesthetic appeal, supporting fish, or cultivating aquatic plants? These decisions will influence the size, depth, and equipment you’ll need.

Larger ponds allow for a more diverse ecosystem, while smaller ones can be easier to manage.

Excavation and Liner Setup

Once the design is finalized, we outline the pond's perimeter and start excavation. We create shelves at varying depths to accommodate different plant species and provide safe zones for fish and other aquatic life.

Before installing the liner, we clear out any debris or sharp objects to prevent damage. A protective layer of sand or geotextile fabric is added before we install a high-quality liner—like Ethylene Propylene, known in the pond industry as EPDM—to ensure durability and a perfect fit with minimal wrinkles.

Filling the Pond and Installing Equipment

Once the liner and rocks are in place, we start filling the pond typically using a water source provided by the customer. A pump and filtration system are essential for water circulation and quality, so we install them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The pump typically sits at the pond’s deepest point, away from the waterfall or aeration. This helps pull water across the entire length of the pond ensuring movement, with the goal of avoiding any dead spots in the waterway. The pump cycles water from the pond bottom, through the filter to keep the water clean and well-oxygenated.

Landscaping and Introducing Aquatic Life

The right landscaping helps make a pond look natural while also helping to stabilize its ecosystem. Plants, rocks, and boulders placed around the edges help blend a pond into its surroundings and hide the liner.

Introducing native aquatic plants encourages biodiversity and supports local wildlife. If adding fish, confirm that the pond’s depth and filtration system can sustain them. Let the water settle for at least 24 hours before introducing fish to give the ecosystem time to stabilize.

Regular upkeep such as manually removing debris or emptying your skimmer basket along with backflushing your filter and monitoring water quality will keep everything in balance.

Any Landscape Can Benefit from a Pondless Fountain in Tampa

Not quite ready to make the plunge with a full waterfall feature? Lacking a lot of space in your yard for the disappearing waterfall you'd love to install? A smaller and less expensive option that many folks still enjoy are pondless fountains. Some landscaping and home goods stores sell large pots which include a bubbling water feature at the top. These can be self containing, fun to watch, and easy to set up. If you are looking for something a little more customized with a larger wow-factor and an ability to amplify the natural water sound, ask us about pondless fountains.

Similar to the out-of-the-box fountains, pondless versions create the appearance that the water is disappearing into the ground. Using the same technology as the pondless waterfalls use, a single foutain, three fountains or custom rock formation can be designed to sit on top of a bed of rocks that hide the water vault and pump which sends the water back up through fountain in a continuous cycle. Another cool idea is to hide one of these vaults right in the middle of your patio. If we were to remove a portion of your pavers, we could install the necessary equipment into the ground and place the rock formation of your choice on top of it to impress all of your guests. Imagine your back patio containing a fire pit on one side and a pondless fountain on the other. You may never want to leave.
