FUN FACTS: Spring Hill, FL – From Dinosaurs & Everything in Between

Spring Hill, Florida, might not be as famous as some of its big-city neighbors, but it has a rich history, unique attractions, and a charm all its own.

Spring Hill Started as a Tiny Planned Community

In 1967, the Deltona Corporation, led by the Mackle Brothers, established Spring Hill as a planned residential community. On April 30 of that year, the town officially opened to the public, drawing more than 15,000 visitors eager to tour the newly built model homes.

The developers expected about 100 residents to move in within the first year, but the area quickly exceeded expectations. By the early 1990s, Spring Hill had grown to a population of over 50,000, and today, more than 100,000 people call it home.

A Mermaid Kingdom Lies Just Minutes Away

One of Florida’s most unique attractions is just minutes away from Spring Hill. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is home to a long-standing tradition that has been drawing visitors since 1947—the famous underwater mermaid show.

Unlike typical aquarium performances, the mermaids at Weeki Wachee perform breathtaking acrobatics in a natural spring, using a specially designed air hose system that allows them to stay submerged for up to an hour. Audiences watch from a 400-seat underwater theater, where they can see the performers glide effortlessly through the crystal-clear water.

Beyond the mermaid show, Weeki Wachee Springs offers plenty of other activities. Visitors can cool off at Buccaneer Bay, a natural spring-fed water park, or take a scenic boat tour down the Weeki Wachee River. The area’s pristine waters and lush surroundings make it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Secret Beach Where the Sunsets Steal the Show

While Florida is known for its beaches, many visitors don’t realize that Spring Hill has its own coastal getaway. Pine Island Beach, officially known as Alfred McKethan Park, offers a quiet and scenic spot to enjoy the Gulf of Mexico. The park features picnic areas, a playground, and a snack bar. One of the biggest draws of Pine Island Beach is its breathtaking sunset views over the Gulf, creating a picture-perfect setting to end the day.

Dinosaur-Shaped Building Stands Along U.S. 19

One of the most unusual sights in Spring Hill is a dinosaur-shaped building along U.S. 19. Originally constructed as a Sinclair Oil gas station, the structure was inspired by the dinosaur mascot used in the company’s branding. The design was influenced by a dinosaur display at the 1964 World’s Fair.

Although it is no longer a gas station, the building has remained largely unchanged over the years. Today, it operates as an auto repair shop, but to locals, it will always be known simply as “the dinosaur.” The quirky landmark has been such a fixture in the community that it is now being recognized as a historic site.

A Food Scene That Might Surprise You

For a town that started as a small retirement community, Spring Hill has developed a surprisingly diverse and delicious food scene.

One of the most popular breakfast spots is the Breakfast Station, where locals enjoy stacks of pancakes and hearty morning meals. Those looking for a taste of Florida’s Cuban influence can find authentic Cuban sandwiches and tacos at small, family-run cafés throughout town. Seafood lovers can indulge in fresh-off-the-boat catches like grouper sandwiches, stone crab, and shrimp at local favorites like the Upper Deck Café, which overlooks the scenic Weeki Wachee River.

Spring Hill also has a growing craft beer and wine scene. Marker 48 Brewing is a local brewery offering creative, small-batch beers, often paired with live music and food trucks. For those who prefer wine, Strong Tower Vineyard provides a chance to sample locally made wines right in the vineyard’s own tasting room. Throughout the year, the town hosts farmers’ markets, craft fairs, and seasonal festivals that celebrate its unique blend of Southern hospitality and Florida culture.

Creating the Perfect Home for Your Koi

A well-maintained pond becomes even more captivating when it’s home to vibrant koi fish. These ornamental carp stand out with their striking colors and unique patterns, turning any pond into a living masterpiece. Many koi enthusiasts carefully select their fish, not just for their appearance but for the sense of connection they bring. We have ties with a local supplier that raises high quality koi, which we can deliver straight to your pond.

We’ll Transform Your Backyard with a Stunning Koi Pond

Picture this: smooth stones, lush water plants, a gentle waterfall, and soft lighting that turns your pond into a glowing masterpiece at night. Some of our clients love focusing on lighting effects, creating an almost magical underwater scene once the sun sets.

The area around your pond should feel just as inviting. Imagine a space framed by greenery, ornamental shrubs, or even a charming wooden bridge. Need the right materials? We source premium pebbles, stones, and boulders right here in Florida, ensuring a high-quality finish that blends seamlessly with nature.

And while your yard might need irrigation to handle the heat, your water plants will thrive, using the pond itself as a built-in hydration system.

When it comes to structure, you have options. We specialize in in-ground koi ponds for that natural, backyard oasis feel, but above-ground designs can add a sleek, modern touch. If you want to take it up a notch, we can build a custom deck around your pond or a small bridge, creating a private retreat that feels like your own luxury getaway.

A Koi Pond for Relaxation Without the Pests

Imagine stepping outside to a peaceful retreat, where the gentle sound of running water drowns out the noise of the world. Watching koi glide effortlessly through the water, feeling the cool breeze, and listening to the soothing splash of a waterfall can instantly put your mind at ease. Studies even suggest that being near moving water can help lower blood pressure and heart rate, giving you a natural way to unwind without ever leaving home.

Worried about mosquitos? That’s the beauty of a well-designed pond—when water is constantly moving, mosquitos don’t stand a chance. A waterfall, aerator, or bubbler keeps the water circulating, preventing stagnant areas where pests could breed. Plus, a properly maintained pond not only stays pest-free but also enhances the overall health of your fish and plants.

Whether you have an existing pond or a new one, we can install an affordable aeration system that boosts oxygen levels, improves water clarity, and keeps your pond ecosystem thriving.

Whether you're sipping your morning coffee by the water or winding down after a long day, your personal oasis is always there, waiting. If you want to learn more about bringing this kind of tranquility to your home, check out our Koi Pond installation page. We’re also available for free consultations where you can get expert guidance. Based on your space and budget, we’ll offer some appropriate options to consider.

Any Landscape Can Benefit from a Pondless Fountain in Tampa

Not quite ready to make the plunge with a full waterfall feature? Lacking a lot of space in your yard for the disappearing waterfall you'd love to install? A smaller and less expensive option that many folks still enjoy are pondless fountains. Some landscaping and home goods stores sell large pots which include a bubbling water feature at the top. These can be self containing, fun to watch, and easy to set up. If you are looking for something a little more customized with a larger wow-factor and an ability to amplify the natural water sound, ask us about pondless fountains.

Similar to the out-of-the-box fountains, pondless versions create the appearance that the water is disappearing into the ground. Using the same technology as the pondless waterfalls use, a single foutain, three fountains or custom rock formation can be designed to sit on top of a bed of rocks that hide the water vault and pump which sends the water back up through fountain in a continuous cycle. Another cool idea is to hide one of these vaults right in the middle of your patio. If we were to remove a portion of your pavers, we could install the necessary equipment into the ground and place the rock formation of your choice on top of it to impress all of your guests. Imagine your back patio containing a fire pit on one side and a pondless fountain on the other. You may never want to leave.
