Do you love fishing, relaxing with you family enjoying the view from water's edge, or swimming and lounging in a natural body of water. Do you have enough land to support a large pond but don't currently have any water on your property? If this is the case and you're interested in raising fish or building your own natural ecosystem, Focal Point Ponds can build your dream. We do pond construction on a large scale throughout the Central Gulf Coast all the way down to smaller
fish ponds and waterfalls in urban settings. Whether you're looking for a long meandering stream that leads to a pond or a compact water feature that creates enough noise to drown out the sounds of a busy street near your home. We can design and install all of these options.
Selecting the right fish species is one of the keys to maintaining balanced and visually appealing aquatic habitats while building a new lake or pond. In Tampa, we offer fish stocking options that include appropriate species, each contributing unique benefits for pond health and natural pest control. Here are a few popular choices for private ponds in the Tampa Bay area:
A great choice for recreational fishing ponds, largemouth bass are natural pest controllers and contribute to a healthier aquatic ecosystem. Known to be aggressive eaters, this species is a favorite for many people to fish because they'll bite at many lure types, which means they're easy to catch.
Well-suited for smaller ponds in residential areas, bluegill fish help manage insect populations and support water quality.
Catfish are beneficial for many ponds in the Tampa Bay region, helping control pests and adding diversity. They are hardy and resilient which allows them to tolerate dirtier water much easier than some species.
Known for managing aquatic plants, grass carp can help keep larger ponds clear and visually appealing, making them a solid choice for areas around the Tampa Bay Area.
These minnows serve as a food source to Bass and other species that feed on smaller fish. They eat all kinds of plant and animal matter, ever unearthing food from within dirt on the bed of a pond. Between their diet and their waste, they serve as agreat species to filter and enrich your pond environment.
The population of your Fathead Minnows can also observed for indications in water quality and habitat changes. If the population is fluctuating heavily in either direction, you may want to consult a water manager too examine things and advise on necessary ways you may need to adjust your pond's cycle.
Each species is selected based on your pond’s needs, whether for recreational fishing, natural aesthetics, or pest control.
Healthy water features or gardens in Florida’s warm climate benefit from regular maintenance to stay balanced and vibrant. Our pond maintenance services in the Tampa area are designed to help manage fish populations, prevent overpopulation, maintain water quality, and eliminating weed overgrowth. We offer follow-up consultations to monitor your pond’s health, water quality, and fish activity, ensuring ponds in Tampa, Brandon, Lakeland, and surrounding communities remain lively, balanced, and beautiful year-round. In addition to fish services, we install
fountains and lake aeration systems
for commercial and residential use, making sure your habitat is well looked after. The removal of invasive plants or a dose of beneficial bacteria treatment may be needed in unkept ponds to restart the natural cycle before fish can be introduced. We can look
at these opportunities too and speak to you about options.
Not quite ready to make the plunge with a full waterfall feature? Lacking a lot of space in your yard for the disappearing waterfall you'd love to install? A smaller and less expensive option that many folks still enjoy are pondless fountains. Some landscaping and home goods stores sell large pots which include a bubbling water feature at the top. These can be self containing, fun to watch, and easy to set up. If you are looking for something a little more customized with a larger wow-factor and an ability to amplify the natural water sound, ask us about pondless fountains.
Similar to the out-of-the-box fountains, pondless versions create the appearance that the water is disappearing into the ground. Using the same technology as the pondless waterfalls use, a single foutain, three fountains or custom rock formation can be designed to sit on top of a bed of rocks that hide the water vault and pump which sends the water back up through fountain in a continuous cycle. Another cool idea is to hide one of these vaults right in the middle of your patio. If we were to remove a portion of your pavers, we could install the necessary equipment into the ground and place the rock formation of your choice on top of it to impress all of your guests. Imagine your back patio containing a fire pit on one side and a pondless fountain on the other. You may never want to leave.
If the ecosystem is kept in check and you're not over fishing, a stocked pond or lake should not require restocking. In a comfortable, natural environment, fish will reproduce naturally and create a self sustaining system that can last indefinitely. If feeder fish are depleted, we can talk about your population and consider restocking at a certain size as well as adding an automatic feeder to preserve your new feeder population. We've also heard from customers whose lake populations have been reduced due to flooding or birds hunting the stock. For the latter, we can install fish habitats which allow them a safe haven to breed and hang out away from naturals predators.
Your pond’s dimensions, water conditions, and intended use—such as managing pests like mosquitoes, enhancing fishing opportunities, harvesting fish as a food source, or achieving a natural ecosystem—are essential considerations when selecting the ideal fish species. We’re happy to work with you on these personal details as we learn more about your water space.
This depends on the type and size. Typically, lakes in Tampa are suitable for fishing a few weeks after stocking but this answer is heavily dependent on the fish species introduced, the pond's water quality, and the size of the fish. If fingerlings are the only fish introduced, it may take 1-2 years until these fish reach a substantial size. With Bass, some people like to wait until they are 15" or longer to catch them. Depending on the size you stock and the food source they're feeding off of, you may need to wait a while until they experience substantial growth. Call to inquire about buying fish for your pond and we'll discuss options based on your intentions for your private pond or lake.
Yes. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission keeps an eye on this kind of stuff to make sure natural ecosystems remain in check. If your pond is connected to another waterway, you may have limitations about introducing certain breeds. While the water may be on your land, it can also makes a difference if the pond is considered public or private. Another factor that may influence the answer is whether you have a natural bottom, clay bottom or liner in your pond. We can help you navigate all of these nuances and make sure that any stocking abides by all state laws.
