Florida is a water-filled state! Not only is there water surrounding Florida on all except the North side of the state, but Florida also is said to have more than 7,500 lakes in total. That puts it in the top 10 of states with the most lakes in all of the United States. Love it or hate it, the state of Florida is visually associated with water (and sun and palm trees). Even many communities use water as a symbolic representation of things like cleanliness, wealth, clarity, relaxation, and calmness.
In addition to the many natural bodies of water, you'll also find man-made lakes and ponds around resorts, casinos, apartment and condo complexes, restaurants, golf courses, country clubs, shopping plazas, office buildings, parks, zoos, amusement parks and private residences. Among this enormous list, many associations and business owners choose to have a floating fountain, sometimes called an aerating fountain, installed in the middle of their lake for visual appeal, to improve their health of their fish, and to reduce the chance or prolong the emergence of algae in their water.
Did you know Focal Point Ponds also installs and offers maintenance on these lake fountains? That's right, we do. Especially in the Tampa Bay Area, we are equipped to put in new floating fountains as well as replace faulty or aged pond fountains that you may be struggling with. We can help new clients in Plant City, Lakeland, St. Petersburg, Temple Terrace, Brandon, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Clearwater, and more locations.
There are various heights and spray styles for these pond scape fountains so we wanted to go more in depth on this page to explain some of the most popular spray nozzles used and what they look like, so you can consider these options as you plan to add a fountain to your pond, lake, or water garden.
Our favorite American-made fountains comes with interchangeable heads as do many other well known brands. The idea is that once a company creates a reliable product, they are confident it will sell well but they also understand that different customers will have different personal preferences when it comes to what spay looks best on their property. The size and shape of a pond can also dictate that some spray patterns work better without over-spraying or disrupting the natural ecosystem.
One of the spray head patterns we see used frequently is the Trumpet spray. This style is like a tall, narrow column of water that gets wider towards the top, like the shape of the musical instrument, the trumpet. This type of spray nozzle is very common among fountain manufacturers. It's seen in many different types of ponds and lakes because of its elegant and distinctive appearance.
Another commonly seen spray in decorative lakes is the
Geyser
spray. This on is like a vertical jet which does not have have any flare at the end, angling the water outward at the end of its arc like the trumpet does. It provides a visually striking effect and can be a great choice for adding vertical interest to your water feature. Keep in mind, certain sprays are labeled with certain names for some manufacturers that try to create differentiation among the crowd. We also see this spray pattern labeled as
Gusher sometimes.
Another one within this same family of tall and thin spray head patterns is Tulip spray nozzle. This is a broader spray in which the nozzles point slightly away from the center so as the spray increases in height, it increases slightly in width to form a tulip-shaped spray pattern which is wider than the trumpet.
For an even larger option, consider a Fan or V-Shaped sprayer. Much like the tulip, this spray gets increasingly wider and creates a circular splash pattern in the water that can be twice as wide as the highest point of the spray. If algae has formed in your water, this type of Tampa fountain is decent for dispersing some of the green, floating algae because once it is has been moved, it tends to stay outside the circular ripples while the fountain remains on. Some manufacturers may refer to this as their Classic pattern.
Other popular styles are Two-Tiered and Three-Tiered patterns which combine some of the above shapes. Most typically, there is a center column of water, like the Geyser or a Jet Stream. This serves as the tallest tier. Then there is a lower and usually wider tier on the outside that might look like a Tulip or Fan pattern. These two (or three) sprays will run simultaneously creating a visually attractive option for decorative purposes. Multi-tiered sprays can be referred to as Crown patterns sometimes.
Not quite ready to make the plunge with a full waterfall feature? Lacking a lot of space in your yard for the disappearing waterfall you'd love to install? A smaller and less expensive option that many folks still enjoy are pondless fountains. Some landscaping and home goods stores sell large pots which include a bubbling water feature at the top. These can be self containing, fun to watch, and easy to set up. If you are looking for something a little more customized with a larger wow-factor and an ability to amplify the natural water sound, ask us about pondless fountains.
Similar to the out-of-the-box fountains, pondless versions create the appearance that the water is disappearing into the ground. Using the same technology as the pondless waterfalls use, a single foutain, three fountains or custom rock formation can be designed to sit on top of a bed of rocks that hide the water vault and pump which sends the water back up through fountain in a continuous cycle. Another cool idea is to hide one of these vaults right in the middle of your patio. If we were to remove a portion of your pavers, we could install the necessary equipment into the ground and place the rock formation of your choice on top of it to impress all of your guests. Imagine your back patio containing a fire pit on one side and a pondless fountain on the other. You may never want to leave.
Keep your guests/residents in mind as you plan for what type of decorative floating fountain you will use in your lake. Are there homes or apartments within earshot or can the fountain only be seen as walkers and drivers enter the premises? Larger lakes may require larger pumps to adequately propel the water high enough to have the right effect when being viewed by shore whereas smaller ponds may need a smaller pump. The depth of your pond also needs to be considered because most of these fountains are designed to have the aerator or pump motor suspended below the fountain but not resting on the bottom of the pond.

Certain fountain manufacturers ship interchangeable nozzles with their products so the users can change them as often as they'd like. The same goes for lights. If you prefer a different color or spray pattern for different seasons, let us know and we can schedule that in our calendars so your maintenance team doesn't need to deal with swapping these items out in the water.
The best part about working with Focal Point Ponds is that we will gladly look into all of these details for you. Once we've been hired to help replace or install your new pond fountain, all you need to do is sit back and wait for the beautiful view and enjoyable sounds of your fountain to begin.
We can haul off your old fountain and often times hook the new equipment into your existing juncture box or control panel assuming it's in good working order. For a free consultation and some tips about what might work best in your lake, give us a call today.
